This guide covers the years towith the inevitable steps forward and backward. The geographic scope reflects the library collections for this time period: The points of view of all participants, including foreign governments and other allies, are represented. The purpose of this guide is to introduce the researcher to the kinds of resources—reference books, manuscripts, newspapers, broadsides, pamphlets, maps, prints, and current historical journals—available at the Library, and to outline the ways in which these materials can be identified and used.

Please keep in mind that the collections are divided into three main areas—general printed collections; manuscripts; and prints, photographs and architectural drawings—and that the librarians and curators in each of those areas are the best guides to the collections.

This guide is meant as a complement to the assistance provided by those librarians and curators, so please be sure to approach them with any specific questions you may have. Because so many of the collections from this time period are rare, and often fragile, researchers will be brought surrogate formats—microfilm, microfiche, photostatic copies and Readex cards—when available.
